A Tribute To Ka Bel
We, in the Preparatory Committee of the Italian-Filipino Solidarity
Movement (IFSM) extend our deep sympathy and heartfelt condolence to the
family, friends, comrades and the entire toiling masses of the Filipino
people over the tragic death of comrade Crispin Ka Bel Beltran on the 20th
of May 2008.
We have known Ka Bel as a genuine and militant labor leader in our times.
His leadership in the KMU was strong and in fact had earned him respect
and trust by the working class not only in the Philippines but also from
abroad. And as a party-list representative, he valiantly and selflessly
continued to serve the toiling masses amidst death treats from his enemies
and health problems due to his age.
But there is something more about Ka Bel with regards to the founding of
IFSM. It was his arrest in 2006 that had caused our Italian comrades
together with our OFWs compatriots to start groundbreaking works in
organizing the IFSM.
But what was Ka Bel doing at the rooftop of his own house that has led him
to a fatal fall? Was it not by his principles in life and lifestyle?
Self-reliance? Simple life? Perseverance? Determination? Patriotism and
honest to goodness in serving the interest of the toiling masses? As
comrades and friends they know him perfectly. But from the masses, these
are the black-and-white judgement of Ka Bel.
Ka Bel and his contributions to the revolutionary mass movement in the
Philippines for national and social liberation left a legacy. A legacy to
which every activist from all sectors of the society must follow.
Long Live Ka Bel!
For the Preparatory Committee,
Paolo & Ka Mike
